Lewis, Frederick

Fred Lewis was born in Duffield in 1895, the son of Frederick and Annie Lewis and in 1911; the family of 9 were living in Markeaton where Fred was employed as a Farm Servant.
On the 8th December 1915, Fred joined the Royal West Kent Regiment. He gave his address at that time as Radbourne Common, and his occupation as a “Wagoner on Farm”. He gave his next of kin as his mother, Annie Lewis. He was described as 5ft 1ins tall.
His was in a cavalry regiment although during his war service he was transferred to the Royal Fusiliers for a time. At some point he received a gun-shot wound to his right foot which left him disabled.
He was discharged from the army on the 16th December 1918 and his home address was Lower Road, Mackworth, Derby.
It has not as yet been possible to identify further details of Fred’s life due to the number of other Fred Lewis’ born at that time in the same area.
